Girls in Education.
Here in america we don't really see an issue with girls having an education, in fact its mandatory for both boys and girls to go to school. When we think about girls not allowed to go to school we think its crazy, but in other country's that is the reality. There are so many factors that go into girls not getting a proper education ranging from the overall look of society to even the bathrooms that are provided for them. One place where It is a major issue is in India so many girls there do not have a proper education like The Atlantic Issue "The Groups Fighting for Girls' Education in India" states "Particularly here in Rajasthan, where only 52.66 percent are literate and some 350,000 are not in school, according to Educate Girls" this is only in one part of the country it is so much worse if it is all put together.
One common issue in India that prevents girls from going to school is child brides. It is a giant issue that affects them in many ways. There are so many girls from different ages, all under the age of 18 who's family's make them marry older men, like The Better India wrote "When a girl is forced to marry as a child, she faces immediate and lifelong consequences. Her odds of finishing school decreases while her odds of being abused by her husband and suffering complications during pregnancy increases.". When these girls get married the husband thinks of them as objects, the brides are there to take care and please their husbands. These children often get raped and abused and going to school doesn't even cross their minds.
Knowing about child marriages we can predict what kind of society they live in. To the few women that do end up going to school end up getting short ended because of their society. They dint see them to be intelligent and strong but rather soft and fragile. The boys who go to school are encouraged to go into studying medicine, engineering, or become lawyers while women are pushed to become artist. If women do end up in the STEM work force they are faced with the gender wage gap. It is true that women have to work twice sometimes more to earn the same amount as men. These girls are also pressured by their parents. They often see girls as homemakers and mothers and they don't see a point in sending their girls to school all together. If they do get sent to school they have to do all their housework as well as their school work thus discouraging them to go to school with all the work.
School environments also affects the number of girls in school. It can be from lack of female teachers to sexist dress code. One major issue that came up when doing my research was the bathrooms in school. I personally didn't understand the issue to the bathrooms but soon came to realize that is is one of the most common issue that prevents them from going to school. Often girls and boys share bathrooms in school so when girls get their periods it becomes a problem. There "social stigmas to menstruation" as Right to Education states, so girls end up not going to class on those days. They are also lack of sanitary products at theses schools and family's are to poor to get them. This issue also tends to lead to violence. Since they are not separated boys tend to bully girls in these unsupervised areas. All of these issued lead girls into feeling unsafe and end up not returning to school.
Although we have made great progress there are so many girls who still do not have an opportunity to get a proper education and even face deathly obstacles for and education. So if you are reading this and are a girl, remember to never take for granted the right of your education for it is such a privilege.
